Agroturism farm at patagonia
Magallanes
1. Describe your project, your place, and its inhabitants (including animals):
"Estancia Río Penitente" dates back to the late 19th century, when scottish family of Mr. Alexander Morrison and his wife Mrs. Hellen McCall arrived to the region of Magallanes in 1891. They were one of the many european settlers who migrated to the region with the dream of establishing sheepfarming in the area.
The ranch has trascended five generations and the original facilities are still preserved, such as the main house and the shearing shed. We incorporated tourism in 1990 as a complement of animal (sheep, cows, horses, lamas) farming, which has helped to keep the history alive and be able to show the typical activities of one of the first farms of Patagonia.
We start growing different vegetables by regenerative and organic ways, by using the organic matter that we can obtain in the place and mixing with the manure of the animal to produce healthy food.
2. List the activities that WWOOFers will participate in and what you want to teach them:
the wooffers can help in different tasks depending the moment of the year.
- Guide of turism.
- working with the vegetable production
- Helping in animal movements.
- Construction
- Pinting
- Attention to turists.
- Helping with some events.
3. What could a WWOOFer's day look like at your site (time slot for participation in activities, expectations...)?
Helping with the tasks of the day and then there are different activities to do, we have trekking routs, a river to fish and different interesting books if want to read.
4. Play the guide! Talk about your own hobbies (music, cooking, etc.) and those possible around (hiking, swimming, etc.):
My best hobbi is farming, I like to practice sports as swimming in open waters.

I had an amazing stay at Estancia Rio Penitente! Alexander, his family and everyone living and working around the Estancia are very kind persons. Alexander would let me participate in several activities such as horseback riding, fishing and so on, which was a great opportunity for me to learn many things. It is impressing how he is working on managing the cattle in a sustainable manner in terms of soil conservation. Moreover, they start to grow their own veggies which is pretty nice.
Tasks around the Estancia are very diverse. And last but not least, it is an incredibly beautiful place that I would really recommend to visit.
